What do you get when documenting an annual summer getaway featuring 12 (very) different personalities? Drama, drama, and oh yeah, more drama.

Bravo’s Summer House spinoff, Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard, debuted on May 7, 2023 and follows a dozen budding reality stars as they vacation in an idyllic coastal town.

Organized by newlyweds Silas Cooper and Jasmine Ellis Cooper, the summer getaway features no shortage of highs and lows. And viewers can't help but wonder how their relationship has evolved or even suffered since filming wrapped in 2022. Are they still together today?

In an exclusive interview with Distractify, Silas and Jasmine’s Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard castmate Preston Mitchum shared his thoughts on his critiques of the couple.

Silas and Jasmine’s ‘Summer House’ co-star, Preston Mitchum, addressed his comments about the couple.

Throughout Season 1 of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard, many of Jasmine and Silas’s friends shared that they disagreed with the dynamics of the newlyweds’ relationship. One person judging them from afar was the couple’s friend and Silas’s fraternity brother, Preston, who took things further by sounding off on the relationship on social media.

During a May 2023 episode, the Washington, D.C.-based activist live-tweeted along with the show.

As fans watched another castmate, Bria Fleming, call Silas “controlling” in a scene from S1, Ep. 3, “A House Divided,” Preston tweeted: “Two things are true: Silas is controlling, Bria is manipulative.” Preston’s take resulted in a follow-up tweet from Jasmine that read, “Your line brother, right?” highlighting that Preston and Silas are in the same fraternity. Preston quipped with “correct” in response to Jasmine’s tweet about them being frat brothers, which soon exploded on Twitter.

Following his Twitter exchange with Jasmine, Preston spoke with Distractify about where he stands with the couple now. He said he knows he’s “different” from Silas in his approach to gender norms, politics, and other issues and admitted some of Silas’s “rules” wouldn’t work for him.

“I recognize that people have the right to do whatever they want in their relationships, and as the observer, I'm like, ‘this feels oppressive.’ I don't care. I'm going to say it,” Preston exclusively told Distractify about Silas and Jasmine. “Silas also works two jobs. So I'm sure for him, he's also like, ‘I work a lot.’ And that is just, also what he's signed up for and what their relationship dynamics are. [But me and] my partner often joked that it wouldn't work for us. Because when we hungry, we go into the kitchen and cook. Like, there's no expectation of who's going to cook.”

Preston said some of his differences with Silas and Jasmine stemmed from being in the same house together for multiple weeks and having their “tensions” rise during filming. If Summer House: MV returns for Season 2, he hopes their differences will allow them to move forward and remain friends next summer. However, neither Jasmine nor Silas should expect him to stay quiet if he sees something that bothers him again.

“There’s an expectation that you should not say that publicly,” Preston explained. “And that has never been me. I have aired out family members publicly. You [Jasmine and Silas] are certainly no different. I am so used to the black experience of kitchen table conversations. And I find them to be the most harmful things that can happen in our community. Yes, there are ways to address things publicly without trying to humiliate someone. But we have a job to do. This is also our job.”

Preston continued: “And regardless of that, I just believe in honesty. And honesty doesn't have to be brutal. But it should be honest. Me telling you something privately while we're all experiencing it publicly doesn't allow me to be honest and doesn't allow me to be honest. So I think you can always critique stuff in love. You can always address things that don't have to be malicious or volatile. But I do think we should all keep each other honest. I pray my castmates to keep me as honest as I kept them. I pray they do. You can quote me on that we can come back next season.”

Are Silas and Jasmine Cooper from ‘Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard’ still together?

Shortly before filming for Season 1 of Bravo’s Summer House spinoff, Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard, began, reality television newcomers Silas and Jasmine took their relationship to the next level.

The couple said, “I do,” in June 2022, and what followed was something neither of them could have possibly anticipated.

In a May 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Silas and Jasmine revealed that they had vacationed in the historic town of Oak Bluffs with their friends for years.

So when approached with the prospect of filming their annual summer getaway, they didn’t think much of it. However, it wasn’t until after filming that they discovered the show was a Summer House spinoff.

“I'm like this actually makes a lot of sense,” Silas told ET. “This is something they believe in, and so for us to be sort of the next iteration of that? It says a lot about how they feel about us."

But the vacation didn’t go off without a hitch.

“When we [wrapped], we were like, wow! That was a lot, right?” Silas recalled. “That was a lot more than we anticipated, but we knew we had a good time."

With the newlyweds’ relationship on full display, many fans wonder how Silas and Jasmine’s marriage has weathered since.

The good news: the couple is still happily married in 2023. The bad news: the rest of the cast hasn't held back when sharing thoughts about Silas’s behavior toward Jasmine.

After the Summer House spinoff premiered, viewers raised their eyebrows when Silas’s costars deemed him a “controlling husband.” And when he spoke with Us Weekly, the reality star admitted that he can see why some people view his behavior that way.

“I don’t want to be on defense about it,” the Army Reserve officer admitted. “I understand why folks may look at it, and I respect their opinion.”

He continued to explain that he’s grown immensely since he and Jasmine tied the knot and that he won’t stop putting in the work for his marriage.

“Everything I do is out of care and love for the people around me,” Silas noted to the outlet.

Jasmine also opened up about how she feels about her relationship unfolding on reality television. “We’re real people, and we’re sharing our lives, and we’re happy to,” the former Playboy Club bunny added. “But it’s going to get a little bumpy along the way. We’re okay with that.”

New episodes of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard air Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.
